Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Sunday, November 30, 2014. Four Ivy League teams were in action – BrownDartmouth, Princeton, and Yale. Princeton finished their time at the Wooden Legacy Tournament.

 

Yale Gets Past Hartford With Big Second Half

Justin Sears bounced back from his poor performance against Providence on Friday with a 14 point and 11 rebound effort against Hartford. The Bulldogs outscored Hartford by 10 points in the second half to win 69-57.

It was an even start to the first half with neither team establishing a large advantage. Yale led 13-9 with 12:51 left in the half before Hartford went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. That lead evaporated after back-to-back three pointers from Javier Duren, but Yale only held a slim 27-25 advantage at halftime.

Hartford was led in the first half by John Carroll with 6 points off the bench. The Hawks shot 37.5% from the field and hit 3 of 6 three pointers. They also committed 6 turnovers. Javier Duren led Yale with 9 points on 3 of 3 shooting from behind the arc. The Bulldogs shot 40.7% from the field and hit 3 of 9 three pointers. They committed 5 turnover and held a slim 19-16 margin over Hartford on the glass.

Yale came out in the second half and took it to the Hawks. Justin Sears had five points and Jack Montague had 8 points to lead Yale to a 40-25 lead with 15:48 left in the game. Hartford got their first bucket of the half a short time later, but Yale proved to be too much. They led by as much as 20 at 52-32 with 10:45 remaining. It was an 8 point game with 4:06 left to play after Taylor Dyson’s three pointer, but Yale hit their free throws down the stretch to keep the Hawks from mounting a serious comeback.

Taylor Dyson, Yolonzo Moore II, and Justin Graham each had 8 points for Hartford. The Hawks shot 28.6% from the field and were 3 of 12 on three pointers (25%) in the second half. Justin Sears had 12 points and 8 rebounds in the second half to lead Yale. The Bulldogs shot 55% from the floor and went 18 of 24 from the free throw line (75%). They committed 10 turnovers, but out-rebounded Hartford 24-18.

Taylor Dyson had 13 points and Yolonzo Moore II had 11 points. Hartford went 19 of 59 from the field (32.3%) and hit 6 of 18 three pointers (33.3%) for the game. They went 13 of 21 from the charity stripe (61.9%) and committed 11 turnovers.

Yale was led by Justin Sears’ 14 points and 11 rebounds, but he had help from others. Jack Montague had 13 points and 4 rebounds, Javier Duren had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Matt Townsend had 10 points and 4 rebounds. The Bulldogs went 22 of 47 from the field (46.8%) and hit 5 of 14 three pointers (35.7%). They hit 20 of 28 free throws (71.4%), out-rebounded Hartford 43-32, and committed 15 turnovers.

 

Dartmouth Loses Close Game At Home To New Hampshire

Daniel Dion scored 23 points, including the game winner, for New Hampshire as they downed Dartmouth 65-63 in a thrilling game.

Early on Daniel Dion scored the first 5 points for New Hampshire and Connor Boehm scored the first 4 points for Dartmouth. At 14-14 Dartmouth went on a 6-0 run, but the Wildcats kept it close by going on a 10-4 run. Late layups by both teams made it 26-25 at the break in favor of Dartmouth.

New Hampshire was led in the first half by Ronnel Jordan’s 11 points off the bench. The Wildcats shot 39.3% from the field and hit only 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%). Dartmouth got 7 points out of Alex Mitola in the first half, but hit only 39.1% of their shots and were 4 of 11 from beyond the arc (36.4%).

Daniel Dion came out in the second half on fire. He went 4 for 4 including going three for three from beyond the arc. That allowed New Hampshire to take a 38-32 lead at the under 16 media break. New Hampshire led 42-34, but a 14-4 run by Dartmouth, capped off by Malik Gill’s three pointer, gave them a 48-46 lead. The game continued to go back and forth until the end. Down 63-60, Alex Mitola drained a 3 with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 63. A timeout by New Hampshire allowed them to set up Daniel Dion’s jumper with 4 seconds left. Malik Gill tried a game winning three but his shot was no good and New Hampshire held on for the 65-63 win.

In the second half, Daniel Dion had 15 points while Tanner Leissner scored 13 points. The Wildcats shot 58.3% from the field and hit 4 of 9 three pointers (44.4%). Dartmouth was led by Connor Boehm’s 10 points with Malik Gill scoring 8 points. and Gabas Maldunas scoring 7 points. The Big Green shot 54.2% from the field and hit 4 of 5 three pointers (80%). Neither team had an advantage on the boards in the second half as both grabbed 9 rebounds.

For the game, Dion had 23 points on 9 of 15 shooting. Ronnel Jordan scored 15 points on an excellent 7 of 9 shooting and Tanner Leissner had 13 points and 6 rebounds. New Hampshire went 25 of 52 from the field (48.1%) and hit 6 of 20 three pointers (30%). They went 9 of 14 on free throws (64.3%) and committed just 7 turnovers in the victory.

Connor Boehm led Dartmouth with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Alex Mitola scored 13 points, Malik Gill had 10 points, and Gabas Maldunas scored 8 points. The Big Green shot 22 of 47 from the floor (46.8%) and hit 8 of 16 three pointers (50%). They went 11 of 18 from the charity stripe (61.1%), out-rebounded New Hampshire slightly at 30-28, and committed 12 turnovers.

New Hampshire (3-2) faces LIU-Brooklyn (0-4) on Wednesday. Dartmouth (1-3) goes on the road to take on Longwood (2-5) on Wednesday night.

 

Brown Fends Off Johnson & Wales For Third Win

It was not always easy and not pretty, but the Brown Bears defeated Division 3 Johnson & Wales on Sunday 75-65. Tom Garrick scored 29 points for Johnson & Wales, but it was not enough.

Brown took the advantage right away and tried to build up on it. They led 19-11 and then led 23-19 at the under 8 timeout. A three pointer from JR Hobbie started a 7-0 run by the Bears to make it 30-19. Brown was near a double digit lead for the rest of the first half as they went into the break leading 39-31.

Tom Garrick had 12 points and 5 rebounds in the first half for J&W. Quarry Greenaway chipped in 9 points and 4 rebounds. They shot 32.3% from the field, went 3 of 12 from behind the arc (25%), and committed 8 turnovers. JR Hobbie had 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting for Brown, which includes his 3 of 4 shooting from the perimeter. Rafael Maia had 8 points and 8 rebounds in the first half as well. Brown shot 43.3% from the field and hit 4 of 8 three pointers (50%). Brown out-rebounded J&W 24-17 and committed 8 turnovers.

The second half began with Brown holding a 41-34 lead with 18:49 left in the game, but then both teams went cold. It would be three and a half minutes before either team put up another point with Garrick hitting a three pointer to close the deficit to 4 points at 41-37. A short time later, Brown went on a 7-0 run to take a 52-40 lead. Johnson & Wales closed the game to 67-62 deficit with 1:51 left to play, but the Bears ended the game on an 8-2 run by hitting all 6 of their free throws to seal the victory.

Tom Garrick had 17 points in the second half on 5 of 10 shooting to lead the Wildcats. They shot 33.3% from the field and hit only 3 of 12 three pointers (25%) with Garrick having two of those three successful shots. The Wildcats committed 6 turnovers in the second half. Brown was led by 10 second half points from Steven Spieth and Leland King. The Bears hit 48% of their shots and went 2 of 8 from beyond the arc (25%). Brown out-rebounded W&J 25-17 in the second half, but committed 12 turnovers.

For the game, Garrick had 29 points and 8 rebounds. He shot 9 of 20 from the field, 4 of 10 from beyond the arc, and hit 7 of 11 free throws. Quarry Greenaway had 11 points and 9 rebounds. The Wildcats went 22 of 67 from the field (32.8%) and hit 6 of 24 three pointers (25%). They went 15 of 24 from the free throw line (62.5%) and committed 14 turnovers.

Leland King led Brown with 16 points and 9 rebounds while Steven Spieth had 15 points and 6 rebounds. JR Hobbie finished with 13 points and Rafael Maia had 12 points and an excellent 16 rebounds. The Bears shot 25 of 55 from the field (45.5%) and 6 of 16 on their three pointers (37.5%). The Bears went 19 of 32 from the free throw line (59.4%), out-rebounded the Wildcats 49-38, and committed 20 turnovers.

Brown (3-5) will face American U (4-3) on Wednesday night at home.

 

 Princeton Routs San José State For Second Win

Princeton’s offense came to life against San José State in the 69-54 victory in the 7th place game at the Wooden Legacy Tournament. Spencer Weisz led the way with 16 points and went 4 of 4 on three pointers.

Princeton started very well getting out to a 12-2 lead while starting 5 for 5 from the field. They led 14-2 before a 9-0 run by the Spartans made it 14-11. The game was as close as 20-19 with 6:51 to play, but the Spartans would not register a single point the rest of the half. That allowed Princeton to go on a 10-0 run to end the half and take a 30-19 lead at the break.

Hans Brase led Princeton with 8 first half points on 3 of 5 shooting. Spencer Wiesz had 6 points as well. The Tigers shot 44% in the first half and hit 6 of 13 three pointers (46.2%). They were better on the glass, out-rebounding the Spartans 16-10 and committed 7 turnovers. The Spartans struggled from the field shooting 33.3% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc (5 of 13).

Princeton started the second on fire going 10 for 10 before they missed their first shot over halfway through the second frame. They opened up a 45-26 lead and had little trouble from the Spartans. The one player they could not stop was Jordan Baker who was far and away the best player for San José State. Princeton led by as much as 20 points at 60-40, but the Spartans could not mount a serious comeback even when they trailed 61-50.

In the second half, Weisz scored 10 points while Brase scored 7 points and had 5 assists. The Tigers shot an astounding 71.4% in the second half from the field and hit 2 of their 4 three pointers. They were very dominant on the inside as the Spartans failed to stop the back-door cuts. The Spartans were led by 18 second half points from Jordan Baker who was on fire as well. He shot 7 of 9 from the field. As a team, the Spartans shot 54.5% from the field in the second half and hit 4 of 9 three pointers (44.4%).

Princeton was led by 16 points and 5 assists by Spencer Weisz. Hans Brase had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Tigers shot 26 of 46 from the field (56.5%) and hit 8 of 17 three pointers (47.1%). They converted only 9 of 17 free throws (52.9%), out-rebounded San José State 28-23, and committed 13 turnovers.

Jordan Baker had 23 points for the game on 9 of 13 shooting. He was also 4 of 5 on three pointers, grabbed 6 rebounds, and had 4 assists. The Spartans went 19 of 43 from the field (44.2%) and hit 9 of 22 three pointers (40.9%). They went 7 of 10 on free throws and committed 18 turnovers.

Princeton (2-5) plays their next game at Fairleigh Dickinson (2-3) on Wednesday. San José State (1-6) has dropped six games in a row and faces UC-Davis (5-0) on Wednesday hoping to end the slide.
