Brown Struggles In Home Loss To Northwestern

Northwestern led from the first bucket until the end, as they sent Brown to their first loss on the young season. Four Northwestern players ended up in double figures in the 69-56 win.

Northwestern quickly asserted themselves and held a 10 point lead by the second TV timeout. The Bears tried to claw their way back into the game, but every attempt ultimately failed, as Northwestern had a response every time. The Wildcats were efficient by going 13 of 27 from the floor (48.1%) and 5 of 8 from beyond the arc (62.5%). Both Sanjay Lumpkin and Tre Demps had 9 points each for Northwestern with the Wildcats holding a 36-26 lead. Brown was led by 9 first half points from JR Hobbie, but the Bears struggled from the floor by going 8 of 22 (36.4%) and only hit 6 of their 13 free throw attempts (46.2%).

Northwestern did not waste much time in the second half as they went on a 12-4 run to take a 48-30 lead three and a half minutes in. It was an easy road from there though Northwestern did not play nearly as well in the second half as they did in the first. JerShon Cobb had 13 second half points, but the Wildcats shot only 9 of 23 from the floor in the second half (39.1%). Brown did not fare any better by shooting 8 of 22 (36.4%). Brown was led by Leland King with 12 points in the second half.

Northwestern was led by Cobb with 16 points, Lumpkin had 15 points and 12 boards, Demps had 11 points, and Scottie Lindsey had 10 points. Overall, the Wildcats went 22 of 50 from the field (44%), 8 of 14 from three point range (57.1%), and 17 of 21 from the charity stripe (81%). The Wildcats finished with 15 turnovers and out-rebounded Brown 39-25.

Brown had three players finish in double digits – King with 17 and 5 boards, Rafael Maia with 12 points and 8 boards, and Hobbie with 12 points. The Bears finished 16 of 44 from the field (36.4%) and 6 of 15 from three point land (40%). They hit 18 of their 27 free throws (66.7%) and committed 15 turnovers.

Northwestern (2-0) faces North Florida (1-1) on Thursday night. Brown (1-1) will travel to take on Holy Cross (1-0), who upset then #25 Harvard on Sunday, on Wednesday evening.

 

Yale Crushes Division III Newbury College

As expected, Yale had no trouble with Newbury College on Monday night by winning 97-51. Both Sam Downey and Jack Montague scored 18 points for the Bulldogs as they captured their first victory of the year.

Newbury College, a Division III school, struggled in the first half hitting just 8 of their 37 shots for a shooting percentage of 21.6. Even worse, they were 3 of 16 from beyond the arc (18.8%). Both Cameron Owen and Daivon Edwards both had 5 points for Newbury in the first half. Yale was led by Montague in the first half with 9 points and the Bulldogs went 14 of 34 from the floor (41.2%). It was clean first half with only 8 total fouls called on both teams and only 2 free throws attempted. Yale led 34-19 after the opening 20 minutes.

The second half was more of the same with Yale opening up on a 27-5 run in the first 6 minutes to put the game well beyond doubt at 61-24. Montague added another 9 points to reach his total of 18 while Downey had 14 of his 18 in the second half. The Bulldogs continued to shot well by hitting 25 of their 42 second half shots (59.5%). They also went 5 of 12 from beyond the arc (41.7%) in the second half.

Newbury was led by Daivon Edwards’ 14 points with Jeremiah Ephraim adding 10 points and 5 boards. As a team, they were held to 17 of 64 shooting from the floor (26.6%) and 5 of 22 from three point range (22.7%). They did well from the free throw line by hitting 12 of their 15 attempts (80%) and committed 14 turnovers on Monday night.

Yale ultimately had three players in double-figures. Downey and Mantague had 18 apiece while Matt Townsend added 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Yale shot 39 of 76 from the floor (51.3%) and 10 of 28 from beyond the arc (35.7%). They went 9 of 13 on free throws (69.2%), out-rebounded Newbury 53-32, had 9 blocks, and committed 12 turnovers.

Yale (1-1) plays again on Friday in the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic in Kent, Ohio. Yale will face the University of Illinois-Chicago (1-1) at 5 PM Eastern Time.
