Incarnate Word Beats Princeton In Early Start

Princeton held an early second half lead, but saw that evaporate in a 79-68 loss to Incarnate Word in an early game on Saturday.

Incarnate Word took an early advantage in the first half and did not relinquish it the entire 20 minutes. At the first TV timeout, the Cardinals led 10-4 and constantly built that lead up. With 8:53 left in the half, the Cardinals led 23-10, which forced a timeout from Princeton. After that timeout, Spencer Weisz made a layup before back-to-back three pointers gave the Cardinals a 29-12 lead. Despite that large advantage, the Tigers chipped away at the deficit thanks largely to Weisz. The Tigers went on a 15-2 run to end the half with Weisz scoring 10 of those points. Incarnate Word led 31-27 at halftime.

The Cardinals were led by Jontrell Walker in the first half with 10 points. Kyle Hittie scored 7 points, grabbed 6 boards, and blocked 4 shots to lead the defensive charge. They shot 9 of 27 from the field (33.3%) and were 5 of 11 from beyond the arc (45.5%). The Cardinals hit 8 of their 10 free throws, blocked 5 shots, and committed only 4 turnovers.

Spencer Weisz had a first-half high of 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting for Princeton. Pete Miller scored 5 points and grabbed 3 boards, Hans Brase had 4 points and 6 boards, and Steven Cook had 4 points and 5 boards. The Tigers went 9 of 29 from the field (31%) and hit only 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%). They did out-rebound the Cardinals in the first half 23-19 and committed 6 turnovers.

The second half began with Weisz hitting back-to-back three to take a 33-31 lead. Both teams continued to trade buckets and with 13:01 left, the Tigers still held a 43-38 lead. Incarnate Word erased that deficit and took a 56-51 lead heading into the under 8 TV timeout. Even with a minute remaining Princeton trailed 66-63, but the Cardinals went 13 of 14 from the free throw line in the final minute to make the score line flattering at 79-68.

Incarnate Word had excellent production from their starters. Jontrell Walker finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds on 4 of 10 shooting and he drilled 10 of his 11 free throws. Traylin Farris scored 16 points on 5 of 6 shooting and 6 of 7 free throws. Kyle Hittie finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds, Mitchell Badillo scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Denzel Livingston had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. The Cardinals went 19 of 51 from the field (37.3%), 6 of 15 from beyond the arc (40%), and hit 35 of 39 free throws (89.7%). They finished with a rebounding advantage of 39-37, 7 blocks, and 11 turnovers.

Princeton was led by Spencer Weisz’s 22 points and 5 rebounds on 8 of 14 shooting. Steven Cook finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds, Amir Bell scored 13 points, and Hans Brase finished with 10 points and 12 boards. The Tigers finished 21 of 59 from the field (35.6%), 4 of 18 from three point range (22.2%), and 22 of 29 from the free throw line (75.9%). The Tigers committed 12 turnovers as well.

Incarnate Word (3-0) will face Texas A&M International on Monday. Princeton (1-3) will face UTEP (1-0) on Thursday in the Wooden Legacy Tournament in Fullerton, California.

 

Yale Beats Southern Illinois In Second Day Of Men Against Breast Cancer Classic

Justin Sears had 17 points to lead Yale past Southern Illinois and Sean O’Brien’s 19 point effort by a score of 53-47.

Yale took an early 10-4 going into the under 16 media timeout and soon found themselves up 16-7 with under 10 minutes remaining. Jack Montague’s three pointer at the 7:39 mark made it 20-9. The Saluki’s finally got the offense going with with a 12-3 run to cut the Yale lead to 23-21. Javier Duren scored the last four points for Yale as they led 27-23 at the break. The Bulldogs were led by Montague’s 9 points, but had a big advantage on the glass with a 20-12 advantage. They shot 10 of 26 from the field (38.5%) and were 4 of 13 from beyond the arc (30.8%). The Salukis were 10 of 23 from the field (43.5%) and hit one of four three pointers. O’Brien was their top scorer with 11 points.

The Salukis tied the game up at 27-27 within the first 65 second of the second half before both teams traded points heading into the under 12 timeout tied at 32. Yale went on a 9-0 run (5 points from Justin Sears) before O’Brien hit a three pointer to make it 39-35 with 10 minutes to go in the game. O’Brien continued to keep Southern Illinois in the game, but Yale began to expand their lead as they led 46-38 with 7:13 left in the game. The Bulldogs would keep Southern Illinois at bay for the rest of the game with the Salukis getting no closer than 6 points for the rest of the game.

Justin Sears had 11 points and 7 boards in the second half on 4 of 7 shooting. The Bulldogs went 8 of 23 from the field in the second half (34.8%) and were just 1 of 8 from beyond the arc (12.5%). O’Brien led the Salukis in the second half as well with 8 points and 5 boards. SIU went 9 of 30 from the field (30%) and only 1 of 7 on three pointers (14.3%).

Justin Sears had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the game while Jack Montauge had 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting with all four of his made shots coming from three pointers. Yale went 18 of 49 for the game (36.7%) and were 5 of 21 from beyond the arc (23.8%). They hit only 12 of 19 free throws (63.2%), out-rebounded the Salukis 39-31, and committed 14 turnovers.

Sean O’Brien dropped 19 points and grabbed 6 boards for Southern Illinois on 8 of 13 shooting. Anthony Beane contributed with 9 points, but he also committed 6 turnovers. The Salukis shot 19 of 53 from the field (35.8%), hit 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%), and were 6 of 10 on free throws. They committed 13 turnovers in the loss.

Yale (3-1) faces Kent State (4-0) in their final game at the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic. Southern Illinois (1-3) takes on Illinois-Chicago (1-3) on Sunday afternoon.

 

Brown Cannot Overcome Double Digit Halftime Deficit Versus Indiana State

Leland King had 25 points for Brown, but he was outdone thanks to a combination of a 23 point effort from Khristian Smith and a 21 point effort from Devonte Brown. Indiana State wound up winning 78-66 in the Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday.

Neither team had a big advantage with Indiana State claiming an 11-8 lead into the first TV timeout. The Bears came back to take a 20-15 midway through the first half, but they would go on a cold streak that would put them in a big hole. Surprisingly, even though the Bears went over 5 minutes between buckets, they led 23-22. However, the cold streak continued with the Sycamores on a 13-2 run to end the first half.

King scored 12 points and grabbed 7 boards for Brown while they shot 10 of 32 from the field as a team (31.2%). They hit 4 of 11 three pointers (36.4%), but committed 12 turnovers. Devonte Brown led ISU with 8 points and 5 boards, Brenton Scott scored 7 points and grabbed 5 boards, Khristian Smith chipped in 7 points, and Tre Bennett had 6 points

Brown came out in the second half and cut the lead down to 40-38 within the first five minutes. Indiana State called a timeout and it wound up helping them, as they built the lead back up to 46-38 due to four points apiece from Khristian Smith and TJ Bell. The Bears were stubborn and cut the lead to 49-48 due to 6 points from King with 10 minutes left in the game. The teams continued to battle with Indiana State holding a 58-54 lead with 5:46 remaining. ISU took a 65-54 lead, but the Bears came back again and made it 65-61 with 2:31 left. However, that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game as Indiana State made their free throws down the stretch to win 78-66.

In the second half, Leland King led Brown with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Rafael Maia did well by adding 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting and going 4 of 5 from the free throw line. The Bears went 13 of 27 from the field (48.1%) and 3 of 7 on three pointers (42.9%). The Bears cut their turnovers to 8 and out-rebounded ISU 14-10. The Sycamores were led by Smith’s 16 second half points. Devonte Brown chipped in 13 points, as ISU went 14 of 24 from the field (58.3%) in the final half. They hit 3 of 7 three pointers (42.9%), were 11 of 15 from the charity stripe (73.3%), and committed 7 turnovers.

King went 10 of 20 from the field to score 25 points and he also grabbed 12 rebounds. Rafael Maia had all 10 of his points in the second half. Cedric Kuakumensah scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and Steven Spieth had 7 points and 7 boards. For the game, the Bears went 23 of 59 from the field (39%), 7 of 18 three pointers (38.9%), and 13 of 19 from the free throw line (68.4%). They committed 20 turnovers and out-rebounded Indiana State 39 to 33.

Khristian Smith scored 23 points with Devonte Brown scoring 21 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Brenton Scott finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds and Tre Bennett had 9 points. The Sycamores went 27 of 56 from the field (48.2%), 6 of 16 from beyond the arc (37.5%), and 18 of 23 from the free throw line (78.3%). Indiana State committed 15 turnovers.

Brown (1-3) faces Illinois (3-0) on Monday night in the Las Vegas Invitational. It will be the Bears second time facing a Big Ten opponent this year. Indiana State (2-1) will face Austin Peay (1-3) on Monday in the same tournament.

 

Penn Drops Third Straight Home Game To Open Season

Lafayette’s big first half was enough to hold on against Penn in the second half and grab the 83-77 victory.

Lafayette was on fire in the first half going 16 of 27 from the field (59.3%) and were 6 of 10 on three pointers. The Leopards led by 17 points with 4 minutes left in the first half and the halftime lead was 45-30 for Lafayette. Penn shot 14 of 34 from the field (41.2%), but missed all 7 of their three point attempts.

The second half saw a potent Penn offense that finally hit three pointers. The Quakers nearly erased the entire 15 point halftime deficit by making it a 62-60 game with 9:28 remaining. The Leopards responded with a 9-1 run to make it it 71-61 and did not look back. Lafayette shot 10 of 20 from the field in the second half, were 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, and hit 15 of 21 free throws (71.4%). Penn was 18 of 30 from the field (60%) and 6 of 11 from three point range (54.5%).

Dan Trist led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting for Lafayette. Joey Ptasnski had 18 points, Seth Hinrichs had 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Nick Lindner scored 9 points and dished out 6 assists. Lafayette went 26 of 47 from the field for the game (55.3%) and hit 9 of 16 three pointers (56.3%). They made 22 of 30 free throws (73.3%), had 20 assists, and committed 12 turnovers.

Penn finished with four scorers in double figures, but Tony Hicks was the man for the Quakers. He had 14 points on 6 of 18 shooting, but had 13 assists and grabbed 4 rebounds. The top scorer for Penn was Mike Auger with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting and he also corralled 9 boards. Darien Nelson-Henry chipped in with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting and Antonio Woods scored 11 points. Penn went 32 of 64 from the field, 6 of 18 from beyond the arc (33.3%), and hit only 7 of 14 free throws. They out-rebounded Lafayette 34-26, had 21 assists, and 14 turnovers.

Lafayette (3-1) faces Yale (3-1) on Wednesday evening. Penn (0-3) has their first road game on Tuesday night against Temple (2-2).
