Ivy League Basketball Roundup: 12/2/2014

Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Only a single Ivy League teams was in action –Columbia. They faced Loyola (MD) at home.

 

Loyola (MD) Defeats Columbia On Buzzer Beater

Eric Laster hit a game winning shot as the clock expired. Maodo Lo scored 22 points for Columbia, but it was not enough in the 64-62 loss to Loyola (MD).

It was an even first half between the Greyhounds and Lions. Columbia’s Cory Osetkowski scored the first six points for them before several other players got in on the act. Columbia led 14-11 with 13:48 left in the first half, but could not put any distance between them and the Greyhounds. A 6 point barrage by Loyola’s Nick Gorski helped them take a 35-32 lead at halftime.

Loyola’s Nick Gorski led the team with 9 points with Andre Walker and Tyler Hubbard scoring 8 points each. The Greyhounds hit 48.1% of their shots and went 3 of 6 from deep. They kept the turnovers down to only three in the first 20 minutes. Columbia was led by 10 points from Lo and 8 points and 4 boards from Kyle Castlin. The Lions shot 40% form the field and hit 5 of 14 three pointers (35.7%). Columbia out-rebounded Loyola 17-13 and committed 6 turnovers.

Four minutes into the second half, Loyola took a 44-38 lead and were able to hold the lead around six until halfway through the second frame. A 6-0 run by Columbia cut the deficit two one point at 49-48. The Greyhounds went on 7-0 run to take a 56-48 lead and led 62-53 with 1:50 left to play.

Then came Columbia’s rally and the dramatic finish.

Steve Frankoski hit a three pointer followed by Maodo Lo making the old-fashioned three-point play on a layup and free throw. Then, Isaac Cohen drained a three pointer to tie the game at 62 with 28 seconds left. That gave Loyola the last shot. After a timeout, André Walker tried a shot, but was blocked by Lo. Eric Laster got the ball and hit his shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Greyhounds the 64-62 victory.

In the second half, Franz Rassman scored 10 points for Loyola while the team shot 47.6% from the field. They hit 2 of 4 three pointers and made 7 of 9 free throws (77.8%). They also committed 10 turnovers. Maodo Lo led Columbia with 12 second half points on 4 of 9 shooting and he missed all 4 three point attempts. The Lions shot 40.7% and hit only 2 of 10 three pointers (20%). They out-rebounded Loyola 14-13 and committed 6 turnovers.

Four Loyola players finished with 11 points or more. Franz Rassman had 16 points and 7 rebounds, André Walker scored 14 points and grabbed 5 boards, Tyler Hubbard had 12 points, and Nick Gorski finished with 11 points. The Greyhounds shot 23 of 48 from the field (47.9%) and hit 5 of 10 three pointers (50%). They went 13 of 17 from the free throw and committed 14 turnovers.

Maodo Lo had 22 points and 4 rebounds for Columbia. Kyle Castlin scored 13 points and grabbed 7 boards while Cory Osetowski just missed out on a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds. The Lions shot 23 of 57 from the field (40.4%) and hit only 7 of 24 three pointers (29.2%). They went 9 of 14 from the charity stripe (64.3%) and committed 12 turnovers. Both teams finished with 32 rebounds.

Loyola (MD) (3-4) faces Mount St. Mary’s (1-4) on Saturday. Columbia (4-2) faces Bucknell (3-5) on Saturday night.
