Ivy League Basketball Roundup: 12/9/2014

Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Tuesday, December 9, 2014. Only one Ivy League team played on Tuesday night and that was the Penn Quakers. They faced Marist at home.

Penn Cruises Past Marist

An awful shooting performance by Marist combined with a modest Penn effort made it an easy win for the Quakers. Sam Jones led the way with 19 points in Penn’s 59-42 victory.

It was a slow start to the game for both teams, though it picked up for Penn as the half went on. After 9 minutes Penn led 10-2, but it did not take long for that lead to balloon. Over the next 6 minutes, the Quakers went on a 14-2 run to lead 24-4. Marist was ice cold from the field throughout the half as Penn was able to build their lead easily. Marist had only 7 points in the first 18:30 of the half until they scored 7 points in the final 1:30. Penn led 35-14 at the break.

Marist struggled mightily in the first half. K.J. Lee was the top scorer with 4 points while the Red Foxes hit only 4 shots the entire half. They went 4 of 24 (16.7%) and hit 1 of 12 three pointers (8.3%). Sam Jones had 13 points in the first half while Greg Louis scored 10 points and grabbed 6 boards.

The second half was a mere formality as long as Penn continued to shoot even mediocre from the field. They did just that with the lead getting as big as 28 points in the second half at 59-31. A late three pointer from Marist’s James Griffin made it a 59-42 final. Marist scored 28 points in the second half compared to Penn’s 24.

For the game, K.J. Lee had 15 points to lead Marist. Nick Colletta and James Griffin both had 8 points on a combined 5 of 16 shooting from the field and 3 of 12 from beyond the arc. The Red Foxes had a game to forget from the field hitting only 11 of 52 shots (21.2%) and connected on 4 of 28 three pointers (14.3%). They did shot well from the free throw line by making 16 of 17 shots, blocked 7 shots, and committed 21 turnovers.

Penn was led by Sam Jones’ 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting and he also hit 5 of 6 three pointers. Greg Louis scored 13 points (on 5 of 7 shooting) and grabbed 9 rebounds. Darien Nelson-Henry scored 5 points and grabbed 9 boards while Matt Howard had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Quakers were not impressive from the field, but they were compared to Marist. Penn went 22 of 53 (41.5%) and hit 6 of 15 three pointers (40%). They out-rebounded Marist 45-31, had 16 assists, 9 steals, and committed 20 turnovers.
