Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Saturday, December 13, 2014. Only one Ivy League team was in action and that was Princeton on the road at California. The recap is below.

 

California Rallies In Second Half To Top Princeton

Tyrone Wallace’s 23 point effort, including 20 points in the final 20 minutes, was enough for California to come back in the second half and beat Princeton 67-57 on Saturday night.

Princeton came out determined by taking a 12-4 lead three minutes into the game. They continued to shoot effectively with back-to-back three pointers from Hans Brase and Amir Bell to take a 20-10 lead just past 5 minutes into the game. The Bears cut the deficit to only 4 points at 20-16, but the three pointers kept falling for Princeton. The Tigers held a 37-28 lead at the break with Spencer Weisz draining a three pointer with a second left on the clock.

Princeton hit 61.9% of their shots in the first half and went 8 of 14 from beyond the arc (57.1%). Hans Brase had 11 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Tigers. California also shot well hitting 60% of their shots, but only attempted 3 three pointers while making 2 of those. Christian Behrens led the Bears with 10 points.

The second half saw both teams cool off considerably, but Princeton more so. The Tigers were able to keep California at bay for the first 10 minutes, but the Bears eventually seized the lead and control of the game. Princeton led 44-42 after 10 minutes, but an 11-2 run gave the Bears a 51-46 lead with 4:06 to play. The final four minutes and change were all about Tyrone Wallace. He scored 14 points in the final 4:06, as the Bears ended the game on a 16-11 run to win 67-57. Princeton was out-scored 39-20 in the second half.

Clay Wilson and Steven Cook were the top scorers in the second half for Princeton with 5 points. The Tigers shot 34.8% from the field and hit only 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%). California was led by Tyron Wallace’s 20 second half points on 8 of 16 shooting. He also grabbed 6 rebounds. The Bears shot 41.9% from the field and missed all 5 three pointers. Their biggest advantage was from the free throw line where they went 13 of 15 (86.7%) while Princeton went only 2 of 3 in the second half.

Hans Brase led Princeton with 14 points and 9 rebounds while Steven Cook scored 10 points. Amir Bell had 9 points, but also committed 6 turnovers and Clay Wilson scored 8 points off the bench. The Tigers went 21 of 44 from the field (47.7%) and hit 10 of 25 three pointers (40%). They attempted only 9 free throws, making 5 of those (55.6%), had 15 assists, and committed 16 turnovers.

Tyrone Wallace’s 23 points was collected on 9 of 19 shooting and he also made 4 of 7 free throws while grabbing 8 rebounds. Three other players scored in double digits with Christian Behrens and Jordan Mathews both scoring 12 points and David Kravish finishing with 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Bears shot 25 of 51 from the field (49%) and made only 2 of 8 three pointers (25%). They went 15 of 21 from the free throw line (71.4%), out-rebounded Princeton 29-24, had 14 assists, and committed only 9 turnovers.

Princeton (3-8) has lost back-to-back games and 3 of their last 4. The face Lipscomb (4-5) at home on Friday, December 19. California (9-1) welcomes Eastern Washington (8-1) to town on Friday as well.
