2015-16 Kentucky Oaks Points Leaderboard (Updated through 4/17/2016)

Since 2013 there has been a new points system in place to determine the 14 entrants into the Kentucky Oaks. The points system replaced the “Graded Earnings” rule that determined entrants into the Oaks by how much they won in Graded Stakes races.

Under the new system points are awarded to the first four finishers of the 31 designated stakes races. Those races can be found here. Points awarded to winners range from 10 points in the early prep races to 100 for the latter prep races.

A table will be provided below after the completion of the first race.

In 2013, the cut off on points was 20 with five fillies having that number. The trio of Pure Fun, Walkwithapurpose, and Unusual Way made the cut off while Cue the Moon and Highestmaintenance were on the outside looking in. Only 10 fillies entered the 2013 Kentucky Oaks, which ultimately made the points cut off a moot point.

In 2014, the cut off was zero points with Please Explain due to a lack of fillies accruing points. A total of 12 fillies entered the 2014 Kentucky Oaks making the points cut off moot once again.

In 2015, a full field of 14 fillies entered the Kentucky Oaks making the points system a needed tiebreaker. Money’soncharlotte was the final horse to make the field with 22 points while Peace and War was the also-eligible with 10 points.

The leaderboard will be updated at the conclusion of each day’s prep race beginning with the Pocahontas Stakes on September 12, 2015.
