Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Thursday, November 27. Both Brown and Princeton played on Thanksgiving with Brown facing Austin Peay in the Las Vegas Invitational and Princeton facing UTEP in the Wooden Legacy from Fullerton, California. Both recaps are below.

Brown Struggles In Second Half In Loss To Austin Peay

Brown held a 38-33 lead at halftime, but they managed only 20 points in the second half in a 79-58 loss to Austin Peay. 20 points from Chris Freeman and another 18 from Ed Dyson led the Governors to a win in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Austin Peay started strong with an 11-2 run to open the game. Brown came back with an 11-0 run of their own to claim the lead 13-11 with 13 minutes left in the game. The rest of the half was back and forth with neither team claiming a large advantage. A late 5-0 run by Brown allowed them to take a 38-33 lead at the break.

Leland King led Brown with 14 first half points while Cedric Kuakumensah had 13 points and 5 rebounds. The Bears went 16 of 29 from the field (55.2%) and 3 of 9 from beyond the arc (33.3%). The Bears out-rebounded Austin Peay 15-13, had 5 steals, but committed 11 turnovers.

Austin Peay’s top scorer was Chris Freeman with 10 points. Chris Horton failed to score a single point, but he did grab 5 rebounds for the Governors. They Governors went 14 of 30 from the field (46.7%) and hit 4 of 8 three pointers (50%). They had 6 steals, but committed 9 turnovers.

The second half was a stark contrast for Brown. The game was tied at 44 with 15 minutes left to go, but Austin Peay went on to outscore Brown 35-14 in those final 15 minutes. Ed Dyson hit 3 three pointers in the following 4 minutes to break the deadlock and put Austin Peay on their second win of the season.

Leland King led Brown in scoring for the second half as well with 6 points and 4 rebounds. The next top scorer for the half was Patrick Triplett with 4 points. The Bears went 7 of 26 in the second half (26.9%) and hit only 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%). They were crushed on the glass 26-9 in the second half and committed 10 turnovers.

Austin Peay was led by Ed Dyson’s 11 points and Chris Freeman’s 10 points. The Governors shot 19 of 32 from the field (59.4%) and hit 3 of 8 three pointers (37.5%). They had 7 steals and committed 8 turnovers in the second half.

For the game, Leland King had 20 points and 7 rebounds. Cedric Kuakumensah had 15 points and 5 rebounds while Steven Spieth scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The Bears shot 23 of 55 from the field for the game (41.8%) and only 5 of 20 from three point range (25%). They shot only 10 free throws and hit 7 of those (70%), but had 21 turnovers for the game.

Austin Peay had three players end in double figures. Freeman had 20, Dyson had 18, and Khalil Davis had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Chris Horton scored 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as well. Austin Peay shot 33 of 62 from the field (53.2%) and hit 7 of 16 from beyond the arc (43.8%). They shot a poor 6 of 11 from the charity stripe (54.5%), but out-rebounded Brown 40-28, and committed 17 turnovers.

Brown (1-5) faces the loser of Stephen F. Austin (1-3) and Prairie View (0-5) on Friday. Austin Peay (2-4) takes on the winner of that same game also on Friday.

 

Princeton Comes Up Short Against UTEP

A defensive battle took place between Princeton and UTEP in the Quarterfinals with the Miners coming out on top 62-56 with Vince Hunter’s 18 points and 12 rebounds leading the way.

Princeton started cold from the field hitting only 2 of their first 9 shots (22.2%) while UTEP went 7 of 13 (53.8%). The Miners also were more dominant on the glass early on with 10 rebounds to 3 for Princeton in the first nine and a half minutes of action. As such, UTEP held a 15-6 lead at the second TV timeout.The scoring slowed down even further, but Princeton made headway in the final 10 minutes of the first half. 5 points from Steven Cook help make it a 5 point deficit in a 30 second span as UTEP held a 23-20 lead at the end of the first half.

Princeton went 7 of 26 from the field in the first half (27.9%) and hit only 3 of 15 on three point shots (20%). The Tigers hit 3 of 4 free throws and committed just 2 turnovers. Steven Cook’s 7 points led the way for the Tigers with Hans Brase chipping in 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Cedrick Lang and Julian Washburn both had 6 points for UTEP while Matt Willms and Vince Hunter contributed with 4 points apiece. UTEP went 10 of 23 from the field in the first half (43.5%) and hit 2 of 7 three pointers (28.6%). They went 1 of 3 on free throws, committed 5 turnovers, and out-rebounded Princeton 18 to 15.

The Miners continued to build their lead in the first part of the second half going up 39-31 with 11 minutes left in the game. The Tigers cut the game to a 49-47 lead. A C.J. Cooper three pointer and Cedrick Lange layup made it 56-48 before the final minute saw UTEP hit 4 of 6 free throws to ice the game and come out with a 62-56 win.

In the second half Henry Caruso scored 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting in 16 minutes of action. Amir Bell had 8 points as well for the Tigers. They shot 12 of 27 from the field (44.4%), 3 of 5 from beyond the arc (60%), and made 9 of 13 free throws (69.2%). The Tigers committed 5 turnovers in the second half.

UTEP was led by 14 second half points by 14 points and 6 rebounds from Vince Hunter. C.J. Cooper contributed by hitting 3 of 4 three pointers. The Miners went 11 of 23 from the field (47.8%) and hit 5 of 7 three pointers (71.4%). The Miners went 12 of 17 from the charity stripe, out-rebounded Princeton 15-11, and committed 6 turnovers.

Henry Caruso ended up leading Princeton with 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting. Steven Cook had 13 points, Hans Brase scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Amir Bell finished with 10 points and 4 boards. The Tigers went 19 of 52 from the field for the game (36.5%) and hit 6 of 19 three pointers (31.6%). Princeton hit 12 of 17 free throws (70.6%) and committed only 7 turnovers for the entire game.

Outside of Vince Hunter’s 18 points and 12 rebounds, Cedrick Lang had 13 points and 10 rebounds, C.J. Cooper scored 10 points, and Omega Harris finished with 9 points, 3 boards, and 3 assists. The Miners went 21 of 46 from the field (45.7%) for the game and hit 7 of 14 three pointers (50%). They went 13 of 20 from the free throw line (65%), out-rebounded Princeton 35-30, had 17 assists, blocked 6 shots, and committed 11 turnovers.

Princeton (1-4) will face the loser of Thursday’s game between San Diego (3-1) and Xavier (4-0) with UTEP (3-0) facing the winner of that game.
