MVSU Cancels Women’s Soccer Season
Mississippi Valley State University (Itta Bena, Mississippi) has announced the cancellation of the school’s 2025 women’s soccer season. MVSU cited the health and safety concerns if the season were to continue. The team had only played three games so far: an exhibition against Mississippi College on August 25, a regular season game versus Northwestern State on August 31, and a regular season matchup against Nicholls on September 4.
UC San Diego Joining WCC
The University of California, San Diego will leave the Big West Conference to join the West Coast Conference beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. The move will put the WCC back at 10 members (Gonzaga is departing in 2026-27, leaving the WCC at 9 members for one year). The Big West will maintain 10 members by the start of 2027-28, as Hawaii and UC Davis will leave for the Mountain West in 2026-27. Replacing that duo is Cal Baptist (WAC), Sacramento State (Big Sky), and Utah Valley (WAC) in 2026-27, giving the Big West 11 teams for one year.
UCSD will move 14 of its 25 sports to the West Coast Conference. Three sports – men’s fencing, men’s rowing, and women’s fencing – are likely to stay in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), but that has not been confirmed. That still leaves 8 (!) sports without a home when the school moves to the WCC in 2027-28: men’s indoor and outdoor track & field, men’s swimming, men’s volleyball, women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s swimming, and women’s water polo.
NCAA Division 2 News
Mansfield University Revises Women’s Soccer Schedule
Mansfield University of Pennsylvania (Mansfield, Pennsylvania) has reduced the number of games the women’s soccer team will play in 2025. The school cited the small roster and late coaching change from the spring as the reasons for the change. Mansfield will now play only 10 games instead of the 18-game schedule announced in June.
Texas A&M-Texarkana Joining Lone Star
The Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles (Texarkana, Texas) are making two big changes. First, the school is adding a football team, which will begin play in time for the 2027 season. The school will also build an on-campus stadium, which will be completed by the 2028 season. The other, much more impactful change is that TAMU-Texarkana will join the NCAA Division 2 Lone Star Conference beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. The Eagles are currently members of the NAIA’s Red River Athletic Conference.
The Lone Star Conference is expected to have up to 19 full members by 2027-28 when Texarkana joins, assuming no additional changes. Texas Woman’s University does not field any men’s athletics teams. The LSC has members located in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, as shown on the map below.
NCAA Division 3 News
CCIW Commissioner Retiring in November
The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Commissioner Maureen Harty will retire in November. Harty has been the commissioner of the CCIW since 2019, replacing Chris Martin, who served from 2002 to 2019. The CCIW has experienced minimal change among its full membership since its inception. Only one school has joined or left the CCIW in recent decades: Carroll University in 2016. The majority of full membership changes occurred in the 1950s and 1960s.
NAIA News
American Midwest Partners With Urban Edge
The American Midwest Conference has partnered with the Urban Edge Network to launch a conference network (WatchAMC.com). The new network will allow fans to watch live and on-demand AMC sporting events for free. Over the past few months, Urban Edge has signed partnerships with numerous NAIA conferences, including the Heart, KCAC, Mid-South, Sooner, SSAC, and Sun. The network also has a partnership with the NAIA to stream some of its championship events.
KCAC Names Commissioner
The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) has named Brandon Buchanan as commissioner. Buchanan was previously the Assistant Commissioner for Operations with the KCAC. Buchanan will replace Ted Breidenthal, who left in August. The KCAC has 14 full members located in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, with additional associate members in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan.
