Ivy League Basketball Roundup: 12/21/2014

Below is the Ivy League Basketball Roundup for Sunday, December 21, 2014. Harvard and Cornell were both in action and played on the road. The Crimson faced Virginia while Cornell played Radford.

Virginia Dominates Harvard

Harvard’s worst game of the season came on the road at #6 Virginia Sunday afternoon. The Crimson shot a horrid 16% for the game while only managing to score 27 points. Virginia won 76-27.

Harvard knew they were up against it taking on Virginia in Charlottesville, but they way they started made it clear it was going to be a long game. Virginia jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Harvard scored a bucket to make it 7-2. That bucket, scored by Zena Edosomwan with 16:31 left in the half, would be the only field goal of the half for Harvard.

The defense by Virginia in the first half allowed them to easily build a 39-8 lead at the break. The Crimson went 1 of 20 for the half (5%) and made 6 of 12 free throws (50%). Wesley Saunders was the top scorer with 4 points, all coming from the charity stripe. Mike Tobey led Virginia with 15 points and 5 rebounds on 6 of 6 shooting. The Cavaliers shot 61.5% in the first half while out-rebounding Harvard 21-9.

The second half was better for Harvard, but only marginally so. The Cavaliers first four shots were three pointers while Harvard’s first four points were from Steve Moundou-Missi. The Virginia defense was still clamping down forcing bad shots throughout the final 20 minutes. Virginia outscored Harvard 37-19 in the second half.

Corbin Miller led Harvard in the final 20 minutes with 8 points. The Crimson shot 23.3% from the field and hit 2 of 7 three pointers (28.6%). The Cavaliers were led in the second half by Evan Nolte and Marial Shayok with 7 points apiece. Virginia shot 57.7% in the final 20 minutes while hitting 4 of 6 three pointers (66.7%). They also out-rebounded Harvard 24-16.

Corbin Miller’s 8 second half pointers were enough to Harvard for the entire game. The Crimson went 8 of 50 from the field (16%) and hit only 2 of 11 three pointers (18.2%). Even their free throw shooting was terrible with only 9 of 22 shots made (40.9%). They had only 1 assists the entire game and committed 10 turnovers.

Both Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon led the Cavaliers with 15 points. Tobey also had 10 rebounds for a double-double while Brogdon had 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Virginia shot 31 of 52 from the field (59.6%) and hit 6 of 11 three pointers (54.5%). They went 8 of 11 from the free throw line (72.7%), out-rebounded Harvard 45-25, had 21 assists, and committed 10 turnovers.

With the loss, Harvard’s (7-2) six game win streak was snapped in emphatic fashion. Their next game will be a tough one as well with a road trip to Arizona State (6-5) next Sunday. Virginia (11-0) faces Davidson (9-1) in their next game on December 30 before starting ACC play.

Radford ended up holding on to the lead for the rest of the game while Cornell was unable to close the deficit to less than 5 points. Still, they kept themselves within distance, but Radford’s late 8-2 spree preserved the win.

Shonn Miller led the Big Red with 15 points in the second half on 2 of 7 shooting with 10 of his points coming from the free throw line. The Big Red were atrocious from the field in the second half hitting only 4 of 27 shots (14.8%). They went 2 of 11 from beyond the arc (18.2%) and committed 8 turnovers. R.J. They shot 19 of 28 from the free throw line (67.9%), out-rebounded Cornell 39-27, blocked 5 shots, and committed 13 turnovers.
