Nebraska DB Charles Jackson Injured Again

Nebraska defensive back Charles Jackson has suffered a knee injury for the second time in 7 months. This time, however, it is not as serious compared to the one he suffered in August when his season was ended prematurely.

Nebraska head coach Mike Riley was optimistic. “The news is actually good,” Riley said. “It could have been bad, but it’s not that bad.”

Jackson will need arthroscopic knee surgery, but is expected to be full strength by the time fall camp opens. Jackson was expected to be a starter at nickel back in 2014 before the injury knocked him out for the year.

Jackson played in 26 games during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In 2012, he recorded 11 tackles while in 2013 he recorded only 7. He played mostly on special teams and as a backup defensive back.

Nebraska has already completed one week of their spring practice allotment of 15. Spring practice culminates with the Red-White spring game on Saturday, April 11 for the Cornhuskers.

De’Runnya Wilson Arrested

Mississippi State’s top receiver De’Runnya Wilson was arrested on Friday night during a traffic stop in Alabama. He was booked in jail after a police dog detected drugs. Wilson has been charged with second degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Mississippi State spokesperson Bill Martin said, “Mississippi State (officials) are aware of the matter. We are getting more details and will handle it appropriately.”

Wilson was arrested with three other men and all four were booked on $2,500 bond.

Wilson emerged as the top receiving threat for the Bulldogs in 2014 after impressing in 2013. During the 2013 season Wilson caught 26 passes for 351 yards and 3 touchdowns in 13 games. In 2014, Wilson played in 12 games with 47 catches for 680 yards and 9 touchdowns. He led the team in all three of those categories. He will be a junior in 2015.

He is the fourth Mississippi State player to make headlines this week after Dak Prescott, Damian Williams, and Torrey Dale were attacked at a concert in Panama City Beach, Florida on Monday. Prescott is not pressing any charges at this time.

Mississippi State begins spring practice this Wednesday.

American Pharoah Dismantles Rebel Stakes Field

American Pharoah Dismantles Rebel Stakes Field

A four month layoff was not an issue for American Pharoah as he destroyed his Grade 2 Rebel Stakes foes by more than 6 lengths. Madefromlucky  was second, Bold Conquest was third, and The Truth or Else finished fourth.

American Pharoah had an awkward start, but was able to gather himself and immediately go to the lead with no pace pressure whatsoever. That allowed jockey Victor Espinoza to relax his horse and control the pace of the race.

Paid Admission and Madefromlucky were second and third a length and a half behind early on with Bold Conquest in fourth by 3 lengths. The Truth or Else was fifth, Sakima was sixth, and Tizwonderfulcreek was last of seven.

Meanwhile, American Pharoah set a tepid pace in the slop of 24.41 for the opening quarter, 49.63 for the half-mile, and 1:15.22 for the first six furlongs. Paid Admission was in second until the far turn when he was through with Madefromlucky and Bold Conquest neck and neck for second.

In the stretch, it was only a matter of how much American Pharoah would win by. That margin ended up being 6 1/4 lengths over Madefromlucky who pulled away from Bold Conquest in third. The Truth or Else finished fourth with the final three places going to Paid Admission, Sakima, and Tizwonderfulcreek. Equibase’s official chart can be found here.

For the win, American Pharoah earned 50 points towards the Kentucky Derby Points Leaderboard to give him a total of 60. Madefromlucky earned his first 20 points, Bold Conquest earned 10 points to bring his total up to 17, and The Truth or Else earned 5 points to give him a total of 11.

American Pharoah is by Pioneerof The Nile out of the Yankee Gentleman mare Littleprincessemma. He was ridden by Victor Espinoza and is trained by Bob Baffert. He ran the one mile and one sixteenth in 1:45.76 over a sloppy and sealed track. He paid $2.80 to win as the 2/5 favorite.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues next weekend with two stakes races. The first is on Saturday at Turfway Park with the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at one mile and one eight over the synthetic main track. The second race is on Sunday with the Grade 3 Sunland Derby from Sunland Park also at one mile and one eight. Both races carry point distribution of 50, 20, 10, and 5 to the top four finishers.

Germod Williams Transferring From Texas State

Texas State defensive back Germod Williams has decided to transfer away from the school. There is no word on which school he is transferring to, but the Houston Cougars could be a potential landing spot.

If Williams does land at Houston, he would most likely need to sit out the 2015 season. Upon returning to the field, Williams will have 2 years of eligibility remaining. In another interesting twist, Texas State and Houston will square off in 2016 in San Marcos.

In 2013, Williams played in 8 games recording 8 tackles and intercepted one pass. Williams had an even better 2014 season. He played in 9 games while recording 35 tackles and picking off 4 passes. He also had 2 pass breakups and 6 passes defended.

In addition Williams leaving, the Bobcats are also losing several other key members of the secondary. Safety Colby Targun and cornerback Craig Mager are both also gone as they were seniors in 2014.

Replacing Williams will most likely be Dila Rosemond or Demetrius Woodard. Rosemond played in 11 games with 23 tackles including one tackle-for-loss. Woodard played in 9 games, starting four of them, and recorded 11 stops.
