Rider’s Big First Half Is Enough To Down Penn

Penn was unable to overcome Rider’s hot first half shooting and fell by a score of 73-57. Zedric Sadler and Jimmie Taylor both had 10 points at the break for Rider.

The Broncs held a 14-8 lead after the second TV timeout, but Penn was able to erase the deficit and take an 18-16 lead. However, that would not last as Rider went on a 13-2 run before finishing the first half with a 40-26 lead. The Broncs were on fire going 15 of 25 from the field (60%) and were 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. Penn shot 35.5% from the field (11 of 31) and were 4 of 12 from three point range (33.3%). Sam Jones was the leading scorer for the Quakers with 9 points in the first half.

The second half was more competitive, but Penn was unable to cut into the deficit with any sustained runs. Mike Auger led Penn with 8 points and the Quakers shot much better from the field at 52.2% (12 of 23). However, the struggled from beyond the arc going only 1 of 7 (14.3%). Zedric Sadler added 13 more points in the second half as Rider cooled down in the second half going 11 of 25 from the field (44%).

Penn was led by Tony Hicks with 11 points and Mike Auger with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Sam Jones had 9 points (all in the first half) and Darien Nels0n-Henry added 8 points. The Quakers went 23 of 54 from the field (42.6%) and 5 of 19 from beyond the arc (26.3%). They shot just 50% from the free throw line (6 of 12) while committing 14 turnovers.

Rider (1-1) plays their first home game on Friday night against Lehigh (0-2). Penn (0-2) has their third home game of the season on Saturday night against Lafayette (1-1).

Cornell Overcomes 17 point Deficit To Beat Colgate

Cornell trailed 23-6 with over 6 minutes to go in the first half, but the Big Red showed tremendous resolve to win 58-52 over Colgate. Devin Cherry led the way with 21 points for Cornell.

The first half was all about Colgate, as they got out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes. Cornell had a muted response while struggling to hit their shots. The lead ballooned all the way to 23-6 at the under 8 timeout with Cornell having made just two shots up to that point. The Big Red got on track after that with a 16-9 run to end the half, but they still trailed 31-22 at the break. Cornell shot 8 of 27 from the field (29.6%) in the first half while Colgate was 13 of 26 from the field. Cherry had 12 first half points for Cornell and Damon Sherman-Newsome had 11 points for the Raiders.

The second half started off slowly for Cornell, as they trailed 43-30 with 10:53 to go in the game. However, the Big Red quickly turned the game around with a 13-3 run going into the under 8 media timeout. After the timeout, Cornell scored the next 6 points and took a 49-46 to force Colgate to take a timeout. Cornell would go on to salt the game away in the final minutes by hitting 4 of their 6 free throws in the final minute. Sherman-Newsome led the Raiders in scoring again with 8 points and they shot 10 of 25 from the field in the second half (40%). Cornell shot 50% from the field (11 of 22) with Cherry leading the way with 9 second half points.

Sherman-Newsome had 19 points and 5 boards for Colgate on 8 of 14 shooting. Austin Tillotson had 11 points and Luke Roh contributed with 10 points and 8 rebounds. The Raiders shot a respectable 23 of 51 from the field (45.1%), but struggled from three point range going 5 of 15 (33.3%) and hit only 1 of 7 free throws (14.3%). They grabbed 33 rebounds as a team and committed 14 turnovers.

Cornell was led by Cherry with 21 points and 5 assists. Galal Cancer had 8 points (all in the second half), Jojo Fallas scored 8 points, and Shonn Miller scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Cornell shot 19 of 49 from the field for the entire game (38.8%) and 6 of 20 from beyond the arc (30%). They hit only 14 of 26 free throws (53.8%), grabbed 36 rebounds, and had only 10 turnovers.

Colgate (0-2) plays their next game on Saturday afternoon at Campbell (1-1). Cornell (2-1) has now matched their win total from 2013-14. They are rewarded with a game against South Carolina (1-1) in the Gildan Charleston Classic on Thursday night. While technically a neutral game, it is that in name only. It will be a road game and a stern one at that.

Five Players Score In Double Figures For Columbia In Victory

Columbia opened up a 12 point lead at the break thanks to 13 first half points from Kyle Castlin and went on to win 70-56 over Wagner despite some tense moments late in the second half.

It was clear early on that Castlin had something to prove, as he scored 9 of the first 11 points for Columbia. At the 13:21 mark of the first half, Wagner called a timeout down 11-4. Things did not improve for Wagner with Columbia maintaining and eventually building their lead to 31-15 with four and a half minutes left in the first half. The Lions led 35-23 at the break thanks to a 13 of 25 shooting effort from the field (52%). Castlin had 13 points and Steve Frankoski had 10 points for Columbia. Wagner was led by Corey Henson with 11 points, but the team shot just 36% from the field (9 of 25).

Both teams traded buckets for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Back-t0-back three pointers from Wagner bookended to free throws from Castlin and the Columbia lead dwindled to 53-47. It did not take long for the Lions to respond in a big way. After 3 free throws and a layup, Castlin drained a three to make it 61-49 with 1:55 remaining in the game. The Lions were excellent down the stretch from the free throw line going 7 of 8 to end any miraculous come from behind bid by Wagner. Columbia went 8 of 19 from the field in the second half (42.1%) and 16 of 19 from the free throw line (84.2%). The Lions also limited their turnovers with only 3 in the final 20 minutes. Wagner went 14 of 31 from the field (45.2%) and 4 of 11 from beyond the three point line (36.4%). They too limited their turnovers with only 4.

For the game, Corey Henson led Wagner with 15 points while Marcus Burton and Nolan Long added 8 points apiece. For the game, Wagner went 23 of 56 from the field (41.1%) and 5 of 14 from beyond the arc (35.7%). The Seahawks went 5 of 10 from the free throw line and committed 12 turnovers in the game.

For Columbia, Castlin finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds on 6 of 10 shooting. Chris McComber had 12 points, Cory Osetkowski had 11 points and 8 boards, Maodo Lo had 11 points, and Steve Frankoski scored 10 points. The Lions shot 21 of 44 from the field (47.7%), 8 of 22 from beyond the arc (36.4%), and 20 of 23 from the free throw line (87%). The Lions out-rebounded Wagner 33-28 and had 12 turnovers.

Wagner (0-2) faces SUNY-Old Westbury on Thursday night. Columbia (1-1) travels to face Lehigh (0-2) on Sunday afternoon.
